Hearing the city - 4 September 2007
Presented by the Centre for Subtropical Design as part of Riverfestival
Riverfestival is an initiative of Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government
When • Tuesday 4 September 2007
Where • State Library of Queensland: Auditorium 1
Cost • Free Time • 1:30pm (for a 2pm start) – 5pm
Hearing the city will provided an 'auditory' filter for the interpretation of qualities of our physical environment. Hearing the city seeked to 'listen' to the natural and built world and to understand our present, and imagine future, aural landscapes.
The Brisbane River Audio Stream
Prominent local sound artists and QUT architectural students developed a set of evocative sound collages that reflect the changing qualities of place as the river weaves through the subtropical urban fabric.
Jointly curated by Leigh Shutter, Senoir Lecturer at QUT's school of design, and Room40's Lawrence English, these sound collages were incorporated into the Brisbane River Audio Stream, an installation of interactive sound works placed along an abstracted river course meandering through the Infozone at the State Library of Queensland.
BDA Breakfast - 24 April 2007
The Brisbane Development Association hosted the Centre for Subtropical Design at an industry breakfast on Tuesday 24 April 2007, sponsored by the Brisbane City Council. Guest speakers were:
Rosemary Kennedy, Director of the Centre for Subtropical Design at QUT summarised knowledge built at the Subtropical Cities 2006 conference and outlined guiding subtropical design principles which are critical to the future of the Brisbane City/Region.
Michael Papageorgiou, Manager, City Planning at Brisbane City Council, discussed how policy and regulatory mechanisms are supporting emerging subtropical urbanism.
The paper, City Designed for Subtropical Living- carrying forward the momentum from Subtropical Cities 2006 is an edited version of Rosemary Kennedy’s presentation.
The Centre for Subtropical Design has begun planning for its next international conference, Subtropical Cities 2008.

Seeing The City- 7 March 2007
Seeing the city explored the qualities of shape, form, scale, height, colour, light and shade of the Brisbane and South East Queensland area, recognising, understanding, and engaging with the particular visual qualities of this subtropical city and region. The workshop helped participants to develop a heightened sensory awareness of the unique visual character of our urban and regional environment, and in turn establish principles and imagine futures that will capture and engage with these attributes. Contemporary life has distanced us from a visceral knowledge of our living environments; we have lost the emotional and sensory engagement with the world known in the past.
Seeing the city reawakened that half remembered experiential understanding of place and provided intellectual and creative guidance to reframe our conceptions of our local landscapes and built environment.
